This page will provide information on modifications I am developing for the famous Fischer-Price PXL-2000 "Pixelvision" camera.

I am developing an interchaneable lens conversion for the PXL-2000. This will allow you to change focal lengths, focus on your subject and blur the background. You can't do any of that with the PXL's "infinite focus" lens. Actually the stock PXL lens is a single element plastic lens that is about as cheap and low quality as anything that I have ever seen. This will also make Infrared shooting possible with the camera.

Update: 23 April 2002:

I just got done doing the first interchangable lens modification to my PXL. Obviously, that incredibly cheap single element plastic lens (it probably cost $0.01 to make) has just got to go!

Since the PXL chip is so small, I think that C-mount lenses are not the way to go, because of size, price and availability issues, and they become very expensive in the shorter focal lengths, (less than 16mm) which is what you need for wide angle.

What I have done is to modify the PXL to accept a new series of very small lenses made for surveillance video cameras. These lenses have a 12mm threaded mount (C-mount is 25.4mm or 1inch). These lenses are real multi-coated, multi-element glass lenses in aluminum barrels. These lenses can be purchased for less than $60 from Edmund Industrial Optics, or other suppliers. They are available in focal lengths from 2.1mm to 25mm.

I made a custom black anodized aluminum lens mount that fits onto the PXL lens board. The lenses screw in, and they are focused by turning the whole lens. Low light capability is greatly increased because these lenses transmit much more light than the plastic junk they replace.

I am also going to develop a filter holder to replace the original rubber ring at the front of the camera. The new part will accept screw-in filters.

Estimated price for this modification is $300.00. We can accept payment by Check (which must clear before we return ship), Money Order, or Credit Cards via PayPal. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in having this modification done to your PXL.
